The Legend of Shanhai draws inspiration from The Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shan Hai Jing) and the story of Kun, the mythical giant fish from Zhuangzi’s Free and Easy Wandering. This musical transforms timeless Chinese mythology into a poetic modern adventure about growth, courage, and the search for freedom.
The story follows Beiming, a young boy born on a remote island where generations of his family have made their living from the sea. Longing to explore the world beyond and pursue his dreams, he faces the restraints of his parents’ expectations. One day, Beiming encounters Kun, an ancient fish yearning to transform into a great bird and escape the deep-sea confines. Together, they embark on a journey to find the legendary Heavenly Current that can lift them to the skies — a voyage that becomes a profound reflection on family, freedom, and self-discovery.
In 2025, X Star Production brought The Legend of Shanhai to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, with performances at C venues and a featured appearance at the Chinese Culture Week Opening Ceremony.
Beyond the stage, X Star also led a UK Theatre Study Tour, guiding young performers on an immersive journey into the heart of British theatre.
